國際新聞協會指出，在新聞自由原本不彰的西非地區，自從伊波拉疫情爆發後，新聞採訪更為困難。除了可能遭感染，新聞人員也面臨官方的封鎖。

總部設於維也納的國際新聞協會（IPI）引述西非媒體基金會（Media Foundation for West Africa）的報告指出，在幾內亞、賴比瑞亞和獅子山共和國等疫病嚴重地區，當地對於媒體採訪報導常充滿敵意，記者可能被攻擊、被官方逮捕，而新聞機構則面對新聞內容被檢查、甚至可能被迫關閉。

西非媒體基金會接受IPI訪問時指出，在社會建設脆弱的西非地區，社區廣播電台可發揮很大的功能，一方面由社區人士經營的電台容易取信於民眾，同時他們也了解風俗忌諱，能用讓民眾可接受的方式提出防疫建議。

包括推特和臉書等社群網站也被用來傳播有關疫情發展的消息。專家指出，社群網站彌補了許多媒體被限制的傳播功能，不過，有些社群網站也被詬病可能散播不實消息。(中央社)
