外電報導，前美國國防部長蓋茲（Robert Gates）的回憶錄中披露，南韓曾試圖攻打北韓以報復北韓砲轟延坪島，不過遭到美國成功勸阻。

根據法新社報導，蓋茨在回憶錄中寫道，北韓2010年11月砲擊南韓延坪島，當時的南韓總統的李明博原先堅持以「強有力的軍事回應」對北韓施時報復打擊，引發蓋茨所說的「非常危險的危機」。

南韓方面原本打算用火砲與戰機空襲北韓，不過美方認為「過火到了不成比例」，因而加以勸阻。南韓方面最後決定僅以火砲還擊率先挑起整起事件的北韓砲兵部隊。

對於媒體報導，南韓曾試圖攻打北韓一事，南韓官方則是不願回應。

2010年11月24日下午2點30分左右，北韓對南韓延坪島的砲兵陣地發動砲擊，南韓也發射80多發砲彈還擊，造成2名軍人、2名平民死亡，以及至少16受傷。
