世界最古老精子 澳洲化石出土

科學家今天(14日)表示，可溯及到1,700萬年前、世界最古老且保存最完整的精子，已經在澳洲出土。
科學家在位於澳洲昆士蘭(Queensland)的里佛斯萊世界遺產的化石遺址(Riversleigh World Heritage Fossil Site)中，從石塊中發現了一個淡水蝦的遠古物種化石，並在裡頭發現了至今最古老的精子。這種蝦子又被稱為介形類(ostracods)，是一種大約生活在5億年前的微小甲殼虫。
新南威爾斯大學生物、地球和環境科學院(University of New South Wales School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences)的古生物學家阿契爾(Mike Archer)說，這個精子是令人興奮的發現，這是在地質紀錄上，有史以來所發現的最古老精子。
阿契爾說，「我們常會發現骨頭和牙齒的化石，但不曾預期到這種軟組織也能保存1,700萬年之久。」
