莊智淵在台苯邀請賽第二日第一戰敗給日本好手水谷隼，得在晚間擊敗塞夫才能晉擊四強，至於水谷準則率先以2勝拿下四強門票。

「每次交手，都打得很接近。」莊智淵在賽後表示，自己在關鍵時刻的反手拍出現不少無謂的失誤，開賽兩人各拿1局後，莊智淵第4局一度挽救5個賽末點拿下。

驚險搶下第4局後，莊智淵再搶下第5局，但水谷隼連追3局，莊智淵以3比4的局數吞敗，「每次都是這樣。」水谷也說，每次碰到莊智淵都打得很接近。

「很開心可以打到四強。」他說，與莊智淵的比賽很難打，「但他多了一點不必要的失誤。」面對近2000名地主球迷，水谷隼不趕壓力，直言：「打就對了。」

不過他也指出，不會把地主球迷當成壓力，很喜歡這樣的比賽場地，並不忘補充說：「我愛台灣。」

此戰結束後，B組只剩下一張晉級門票，莊智淵得與稍早擊敗克里山的塞夫進行交手，兩人戰績同為1勝1敗。
