外國媒體刊登了一組照片，展示了在俄羅斯堪察加半島附近，一片橙色與紅色相間的『光團』出現在深夜中。從香港飛往阿拉斯加的航班上的飛行員將此景拍攝了下來。

環球網據英國《每日郵報》報導，在『光團』形成前20分鐘，有一道垂直的閃電曾擊中該區域。而荷蘭飛行員凡‧黑斯特(van•Heijst)稱，『光團』不是墨魚捕撈船發出的，但有可能是海底火山噴發形成的。而相關部門已經前往該地段進行調查。
