針對成功大學「南榕廣場」命名風波，鄭南榕基金會發出聲明表示，台灣南方的成功大學自2013年11月下旬，以民主方式舉辦新廣場命名活動，展現校方開明作風，令人欣慰；其後「南榕廣場」獲得最高票，相信許多關心此活動的師生好惡不一。本會基於尊重學校活動的獨立性，自始不便置喙，但樂見民主教育在校園得以茁壯。

聲明說，大學為形塑自主人格與社會價值的教育殿堂，本會秉持尊重此命名活動善意的初衷，無論命名的過程與結果為何，肯定該活動初期顯現大學的民主作為。雖然成功大學15日校務會議表決取消廣場命名，技術性地否決民主化投票命名結果，已為定局，本會仍期盼成功大學繼續以培育學生民主素養為職志。

聲明說，據媒體引用現場影音檔報導，今日成功大學校務會議討論「南榕廣場」的議題，會中爆發激烈爭論，驚聞有歷史系教授引用1989年保守媒體對「鄭南榕自焚」的扭曲報導，且批評「鄭南榕很像伊斯蘭的炸彈客」，該發言者對台灣民主運動史的無知、對伊斯蘭的輕蔑、對學術修為的濫用、對學生民主憧憬的玩弄，在在顯示大學教育中偽民主的恥辱，本會對於這樣的引用與類比表示嚴厲譴責。
