Maria Sharapova在澳網第二輪遭遇義大利選手Karin Knapp的強力挑戰，被逼到長盤決勝花了208分鐘才以6-3、4-6、10-8搶下三十二強門票。

此役之前，Sharapova與Knapp有過一次交手，在2008年的法網三十二強，當時Sharapova以2比0的盤數勝出。

今度對決，俄羅斯美女就受到對手強力挑戰，，加上高溫肆虐，艱苦逼出盤末點後，一度被Knapp化解，之後才在自己的盤末發球局勝出。

第二盤雙方一陣互保後，Sharapova率先破發，但隨後被Knapp回破，來到第10局Sharapova面臨非保不可的發球局，卻被直落四破掉。

決勝盤雙方一度戰到3-3，好不容易迎來賽末發球局，結果錯失3個賽末點還發生雙誤，來到長盤決勝還8-8僵局，這一盤歷時115分鐘結束。

賽後Sharapova表示：「這是一場困難的比賽，我在比賽中祭出全力，其實我們彼此都有機會，我只得抓住最關鍵的機會多拿幾分，現在終於贏了，生理與心理都比較輕鬆了！」

接著在三十二強戰，Sharapova將與法國選手Alize Cornet交手，兩人曾在2012年的斯圖加特網賽對決過，當時Cornet輸掉第一盤後退賽。
