臺中新社花海節、國際花毯節9日在市長胡志強、農委會主委陳保基剪綵下開幕，今年新社花海除了30公頃廣大花海美景，2公頃臺中國際花毯節園區賞區，還精心規畫了八大展館、五大展區；五顏六色的花朵綻放，美不勝收，吸引大批民眾爭相觀賞、拍照。
今年的新社花海節以「花間 漫遊 樂悠遊」為主軸，將大臺中山城的悠閒氛圍，結合廣大的花海地景，帶給民眾心靈與視覺的雙重饗宴，另外，臺中國際花毯節共有三座巨型主題花毯，包括「魔法城堡」、「大地是我的衣裳」及「山櫻花花毯」三大主題區，今年活動時間即日起至12月8日止，涵蓋5個週休假日。
9日的天候良好，市長胡志強到花海現場除了親切與民眾閒話家常，也觀看最受歡迎的「魔法城堡」秀，還搭上休閒農業區的「農遊觀光巴士」俏皮合照，藝人郭子乾及小優也一同參與。胡市長表示，去年花毯節主題以「媽祖」為主題，今年以為很難再想出新的創意，結果觀光旅遊局以「愛遊花境」突破以往平面概念，將美麗花卉結合夢幻的創意包裝，以童話愛麗絲夢遊仙境故事元素結合電影「少年PI的奇幻漂流」經典場景，「創意」加上「美麗花景」，讓大家都知道臺中的好。
農委會主委陳保基表示，新社花海第8年舉辦，已經成為農業盛事，今年活動呈現全臺花卉研究成果，並且把花卉跟生活結合在一起，還有許多新的品種、中草藥與民眾分享。他也感謝臺中市政府對於新社花海，特別是周邊交通的幫忙。
配合2013新社花海暨台中國際花毯節，市府交通局規劃3線免費接駁車，於花海期間的每星期六、日行駛，分別由北屯區太原停車場、豐原火車站、東勢河濱公園接駁遊客至花海展區，請民眾多加利用。交通局呼籲民眾，假日賞花時多利用接駁車，平日也可搭乘公車前往，由台3線方向進入花海區域車輛，建議於上午6時至10時前往花海展區，於下午2時前提前離開花海展區，以避免陷入塞車的車潮中。
