小行星「1950 DA」以每秒15公里的速度朝地球飛來，美國航太總署科學家預測它可能在2880年3月16日撞上地球，雖然機率僅0.3%，但若不幸言中，867年後「1950 DA」將以時速逾6萬公里衝入大西洋，威力相當於4.4萬噸黃色炸藥TNT。

他們模擬1950 DA小行星撞擊地球的結果，將釋放出50兆噸級以上的能量，撞向紐約市的話，將會摧毀周圍160公里範圍內任何物體，一切都夷為平地，這還未考慮在空中爆炸時形成的大氣塵埃、碎片等兩種殺傷力，還可能形成海嘯，造成地球毀滅。
