2014 年 9 月 17 日 Sony 公司發表 2014 財年業績預告，原的虧損 500 億日元預期調整為虧損 2,300億日元，56 年來首次取消股東年終分紅，2014 年 Sony 再度陷入巨額虧損，公司認為中國智慧型手機廠商崛起導致市場競爭加劇，Sony 手機銷量大幅低預期，同時 Sony 還宣布將在 2014 財年裁掉 15%手機業務相關員工。

Sony 執行長平井一夫將智慧型手機業務作為複興公司的核心業務，2014 年 5 月 Sony 將個人電腦和電子書業務售出，業務瘦身後集中資源發展智慧型手機和娛樂遊戲業務，2014 年 4 月至 6 月全球智慧型手機市場出貨量成長了 20%，Sony 推出 Xperia 系列高階智慧型手機在面對蘋果三星高階手機和中國廠商的廉價產品雙面夾擊中市場表現平平，2014 年 7 月 Sony 將本財年手機銷量預期從 5,000 萬台下調至 4,300 萬台。 2014 財年手機銷量大幅低於預期導致 Sony 扭虧無望。

Sony 發表業績預告稱 2014 年虧損將擴大到 2,300 億日元，自 1958 年以來首次取消股東年終分紅，新一輪的裁員計劃將面對 Sony 智慧型手機業務相關的員工，大約會有 1,000 人在本財年被裁掉，約在智慧型手機業務員工總數的 15%。
