繼巴西後，墨西哥成為A組第二支取勝的隊伍，靠著Oribe Peralta的進球，幫助三色軍團世界盃首戰以1：0擊敗「非洲雄獅」喀麥隆。

2014年世界盃足球賽，A組的墨西哥與喀麥隆在台北時間14日凌晨12點在納塔爾沙丘球場進行交手，墨西哥目前與地主巴西積分同為3分。

墨西哥核心人物Giovani dos Santos上半場就兩度射破喀麥隆大門，但均因越位判進球無效，上半場以0：0平手。

第四度出征世界盃的Samuel Eto'o，兩度帶有威脅性的射門都以中門柱收場，結果第61分鐘Santos射門被擋下，跟進Peralta把球補進，踢入全場唯一一顆進球。

這是墨西哥在世界盃第一次擊敗非洲隊伍，並延續1998年法國世界盃起，世界盃首戰不敗的記錄，目前累計為4勝1和。
