葉門的蓋達分支被指可能威脅西方使領館。美國官員擔心，蓋達恐怖組織可能已成功研製出新的液體炸彈，只要把一件普通的衣服浸在特製的液體內，衣服乾後便成炸彈。
美國廣播公司（ABC）引述兩名美國政府資深官員，這種液體炸彈製作巧妙，相信是出自阿拉伯半島蓋達炸彈專家阿西里（Al-Asiri）的手中。只需簡單將衣服浸泡在炸藥溶液中，然後弄乾，點燃衣服便會爆炸。這樣的設計，專家擔心現在的安檢系統難以偵測，因此歐美等國不敢掉以輕心，紛紛提高戒備。
據英國《每日郵報》報導，這就是數日前美方發布全球旅遊警示的原因之一。
蓋達過去就曾在2009年的聖誕節，企圖用液體炸彈炸毀一班飛往美國底特律的客機，但引爆器失靈，襲擊最終宣告失敗。除了新型液體炸彈，美國情報局也不排除會有自殺式襲擊者，將爆炸裝置藏於體內再進行攻擊。
據美國媒體報導，近日有數十名蓋達成員抵達葉門，準備策動襲擊。美國也已宣布撤走駐葉門非必要外交人員，並派出空軍C-17運輸機到薩那接人。
美國國務院表示，恐怖襲擊威脅持續存在，呼籲在當地的美國人盡快離開。而英國基於安全考慮，亦撤走使館全部人員。也門當局加派部隊和裝甲車在薩那街頭巡邏，保護總統府和其他重要設施。
