菲律賓外交部宣佈，日本首相安倍晉三星期五將到菲律賓訪問兩天，加強兩國的戰略夥伴關係。他也會和菲律賓總統艾奎諾三世交換海上安全等議題的意見。

菲律賓外交部強調，「日本是菲律賓唯二的戰略夥伴」。菲律賓的另一個戰略夥伴是美國。

另外，日本去年也是菲律賓第一大貿易夥伴及官方發展援助的提供國，同時也是菲律賓第二大投資來源、第三大觀光客來源。

安倍在上一任首相任內訪問過馬尼拉，和當時的菲律賓總統亞羅育簽署了好幾項聯合聲明及外交文件。
